Personhood and the Incarnation

Christmas is the day that we celebrate the first coming of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. We refer to this amazing event as the Incarnation or the doctrine of the God-Man. The doctrine that the second Person of the Godhead took on the form of human flesh and dwelt among us has been the subject of much debate throughout Church history.  Have you ever wondered why would God become a man? Surely God could have forgiven sin without taking on human flesh.

In the 12th century a renown theologian by the name of Anselm, raised the issue and then answered it in a three part treatise. Personhood was a reoccurring theme throughout.

In his main work, Cur Deus Homo, he states, “No one, however, ought to make satisfaction for the sin of man except man; and no one can make this satisfaction except God Himself. He who makes satisfaction for human sin must therefore be God-man." He went on to say that the first act of sin was directed primarily against the personhood of the Son, and if that is so, then it is more fitting that the Son become incarnate, "for the one to whom more particular [or direct] injury was done is the one to whom the punishment or pardon for that fault is more fittingly entrusted."

Here is the logic behind his declaration: Because God is infinitely just, a man had to atone for the sins committed by man. That man had to be sinless in order to satisfy God's justice. But, because God is also infinitely holy, no one but God himself could make satisfaction to God for the infinite weight of human sin. Anselm’s declaration was that the Son of God became incarnate in order to redeem humanity, and to show us just how valuable humanity truly is to God..

Rejoice! Jesus became the God-Man at the moment of conception—not birth. He IS the reason for the season!

WE CELEBRATE HIS INCARNATION!

"And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS." [Luke 1:31]

"And the Word became  flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth."     [John 1:14]

Personhood Alliance, by His grace and His truth, seeks to represent to all government just how valuable humanity is to God.
